NUMERIC EVIDENCE

Quantitative analysis

Quantitative analysis uses numeric measurements to describe patterns, compare groups or estimate relationships. A useful result starts with a clear question and a sensible account of how the numbers were collected.

Describe first, then infer

Begin with counts, distributions, ranges and plots. These describe the observed data and help catch problems. Inferential methods add uncertainty when estimating beyond the sample, but their assumptions and sampling design still matter. Avoid reporting a single statistic without its units, context and uncertainty.
